Keynote: The Metaverse Continuum Creates a Defining Moment for Blockchain Leaders - Melanie Cutlan, Managing Director, Metaverse XR & Blockchain Lead, Accenture
The exponential pace of technology innovation is creating one of the most exciting periods of positive change and progress in history. The Metaverse, which is a continuum that stretches across all aspects of business, from consumer to worker and across the entire enterprise, is one of the five forces Accenture has identified that businesses must harness today to be the leaders of tomorrow.

As the future of the Internet advances, two important innovations are emerging: the Internet of Place—how to create and operate shared virtual spaces—and the Internet of Ownership—where blockchain and other technologies are creating unique verifiable digital identities for people and things, enabling everything from digital currencies to new products.

The momentum of the Metaverse is creating a defining moment for leaders in the blockchain space. In this keynote, Melanie will outline the changing expectations and opportunities ahead-more specifically how the Hyperledger community can build on its existing credibility and leadership position in Blockchain and replicate around Open Source and the Metaverse.

Token Economies: Moving Beyond NFTs - Michael Klein, Accenture
The world is a buzz about NFTs with every media publication, startup, and technology executive claiming NFTs are the ‘next big thing’. However, non-fungible tokens are only half the picture, and overlook the full range of tokenization options available to transform the way we work and live. “Token economies” encompasses the true potential to unlock new forms of value transfer never before available in the digital world. What makes tokens different than traditional forms of value transfer? When should I use a fungible token vs a non-fungible token? Why does this truly matter to my business? Grounded in the Global Blockchain Business Council’s Token Taxonomy Framework, we will attempt to answer these questions to separate NFT hype from token reality.

Developing Enterprise Blockchain Applications with Hyperledger Fabric - Andrew Coleman, IBM
With the increasing adoption of blockchain across industries such as finance, healthcare and supply chain, enterprise architects and developers are creating or adapting client applications to interact with these distributed ledgers. The challenge is making these technologies usable without the developer having to be an expert in crypto and the complex transaction endorsement requirements around blockchain. The latest v2.4 release of Hyperledger Fabric adds a new component to radically simplify the life of client application developers. By embedding the ‘gateway’ programming model directly into the Fabric peers and creating a new set of lightweight SDKs, the creation of client applications has become easier than ever. This session will teach the developer how to connect their applications to a Fabric network and invoke transactions to modify and query the ledger state.

Demo: DIDIoT – A Decentralized Identity Framework for Internet of Things - Antonio Mateus, CPQD
The IoT has become a reality in our daily lives. Its applications range from simple temperature sensors to the communication of cars on a highway. Indeed, the devices now are in charge of collect and store sensible data from their owners, which makes them a target for hackers. However, securing the data in IoT environments is challenging due factors such as heterogeneity and device limitation. With this in mind, we from CPQD developed the DIDIoT, which consists in a decentralized identity framework for Internet of things. The DIDIoT applies the paradigm of decentralized identity and verifiable credentials to provide an additional security/privacy layer for the devices communication. The DIDIoT was implemented using the Hyperledger Aries framework. Our testbed tests shows that we can successfully enhance devices security by using the didcomm over the MQTT protocol to secure messages.

Demo: Low-Code Development Tooling For FT & NFT Applications on Hyperledger Fabric - Mark Rakhmilevich & Gourav Sarkar, Oracle
Without native Fabric token support, developing an application with fungible and non-fungible tokens involves high complexity and requires specialized expertise to build the complete token life cycle with Hyperledger Fabric chaincodes. Using low-code Blockchain App Builder tool created by Oracle for its blockchain platform, this demo will show how developers, consultants and business users can rapidly create production-ready fungible and non-fungible token chaincodes with built-in security. The low code approach for token chaincodes simplifies development & maintenance and expedites the adoption of tokenization due to low development cost and faster time-to-market for any application release. You will see how this tool uses simple json or yaml templates to specify token anatomy, tailor token behaviors and related properties, add custom properties and methods if needed. We'll then show the auto-generation in TypeScript or Go of core methods required to support behaviors and properties, and additional wrapper functions for full token lifecycle for FTs and NFTs. The generated chaincodes can be deployed locally or to remote blockchain nodes and invoked through REST APIs.

Autonomous Risk Management of DeFi - Vipin Bharathan, dlt.nyc
DeFi has seen rapid development. With this rapid development comes reports of spectacular heists, scams and hacks. Rapid development and great returns come with risks. Without risk, there is no reward. The broader financial system has been dealing with this phenomenon for centuries, mostly through the practice of Risk Management.

This talk answers the question "Can such Risk management practices be adopted to DeFi?" Our answer is yes. We propose a framework and suggestions for a solution fusing familiar risk management proposals.

These include ways to deal with the vast amount of data, Value at Risk Methods (including governance risk), trading risk methods integrated and extended to the DeFi world through automated risk monitoring and mitigation. The surfacing of these risks and integration into trading systems on the edge (aka wallets) with a transparent scoring mechanism will result in wider acceptance of DeFi.
Drawing parallels with structures in Finance; the hacks that have happened, ideas for infrastructure, automation of scoring, division between the edge and the core and integration of such techniques into the trading and risk management of Web3:Yield Farms, DEXes, NTFs ...

Design Patterns to Practically Scale Blockchain Networks - Deepika Karanji & Arun S M, Walmart Global Tech India
Blockchain technology has gained mass attention but mass adoption is still a distant future because it is yet to address scalability and user experience issues. The 3 pillars of blockchain - Security, Decentralization and Scalability seem to constantly strive to co-exist but struggle to live in harmony. Scalability and Decentralization are often held back by security, security tends to be compromised by any shifts on a network that offer scalability. Some platforms claim a higher transaction throughput, but compromise on decentralization. Finding a balance between the three is difficult and presents a problem referred to as the Blockchain Trilemma. Few projects propose developing their own blockchains, neglecting the massive developer community and ecosystem that already exists. If there is going to be any sort of mass adoption, scalability is critical. Lately, there have been solutions in Layer 2 space that use innovative and practical design patterns to tackle the trilemma. Popular design patterns like state channels, side chains, optimistic rollups and zero-knowledge rollups have been proven to improve transaction speeds without compromising on security and decentralization.

Demo: Infrastructure for Managing, Sharing, and Utilizing Sensitive Data using Hyperledger Fabric Private Chaincode Running on Microsoft Azure - Koshi Ikegawa, Hitachi, Ltd.
In the World Economic Forum 2019, Data Free Flow with Trust (DFFT) was advocated. Especially for some domains such as medical institutions and governments, where privacy protection is essential, it must handle sensitive data such as healthcare data and personal information. Distributed ledger technologies such as Hyperledger Fabric make it possible to share data among multiple organizations with trust. However, it is not suitable for sensitive data because the distributed ledger discloses stored data to all organizations. Hyperledger Fabric has implemented features such as Channel and Private Data Collection to handle sensitive data. In addition, Hyperledger Fabric Private Chaincode allows transactions and data to be executed in a confidential manner by running chaincode on a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) which is a CPU security feature. However, it requires a special machine with TEE. At the beginning of this presentation, Koshi will introduce OSS distributed ledger technologies, starting with Hyperledger Fabric Private Chaincode. Next, Koshi will introduce one of their use cases and show how to run Fabric Private Chaincode on Microsoft Azure.

Evaluating Hyperledger URSA for Production Deployments - Pierre Roberge, Digital Identity Laboratory of Canada & Hart Montgomery, The Linux Foundation
With decentralized identity and tools maturing, many organizations are moving their focus from proof-of-concept (PoC) to mission critical systems dependent upon decentralized identity technologies. Several leading Canadian public and private organizations, using a “trust but verify” philosophy, required an independent cybersecurity review of the URSA library. Hyperledger URSA is a shared cryptographic library used to avoid duplicating other cryptographic work and increases security. It is an opt-in repository for Hyperledger and non Hyperledger projects to place and use crypto. Project sponsors, several Canadian public sector entities and Interac, recognise that end users rely on strong security to deliver high levels of assurance required of important consumer transactions with their governments and their financial institutions. Many of the world’s leading advancements in decentralized identity, several originating in Canada, rely on the Hyperledger family of technologies. The URSA library is a key component, depended upon to provide the security overlay for decentralized identity. Come join Pierre Roberge and Hart Montgomery to hear about the URSA review and its outcomes!

Why You Shouldn’t Just Trust Your Blockchain – And Apply Critical System Design - Imre Kocsis, Budapest University of Technology and Economics
The elevator pitch for distributed ledgers is very powerful: they provide highly fault- and attack-tolerant databases with very high integrity. In reality, they don't. But they may, and with high confidence, if the lessons and techniques of critical system design are applied - there's just still no free lunch. Presented by Imre Kocsis, a researcher at the Fault-Tolerant Systems Research Group at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the talk showcases how various internal faults may propagate through a Hyperledger Fabric network and have unacceptable consequences at the application level - and how error propagations can be reasoned about (tooling showcased) and even caught in their tracks by applying classic fault tolerance techniques (such as diversification of chaincode implementations, rollbacks and the like). Chaincode faults - i.e., smart contract bugs - receive special attention in the talk. Copying the example of swcregistry.io for Solidity, we began to assemble a registry for Fabric chaincode weaknesses and created tooling for code weakness detection - and injection, to be able to assess the effects of various types of programming errors.

Over the last 5 years Enterprises have leveraged permissioned/private blockchain for enterprise use cases which has led to digitization of assets that are used for value exchange among the permissioned participants. Public chains bring a larger ecosystem and liquidity that can be valuable to the monetization of the digital assets created in the permissioned/ private blockchain networks. Technological enhancements like Zero Knowledge proofs and Non Fungible Tokens can allow safe exchange of value across permissioned/ private and public chains. Hyperledger project “Cactus” and “Weaver” assets are initiatives that are making this interoperability possible. Integrating Besu EVM and Ethereum Transactions into Hedera Hashgraph - Danno Ferrin, Hedera Hashgraph
The explosive growth of DeFi and DAOs have created a very powerful one-two punch for common interfaces in Smart Contracts and User Experience: the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and the Ethereum JSON-RPC APIs. This has resulted in the ubiquitous availability of software and hardware wallets through which nearly all public chain transactions are conducted in the greater ethereum ecosystem. In this presentation Danno will discuss the process that Hedera Hashgraph went through to increase their compatibility with the greater etheruem ecosystem. Hedera replaced their existing EVM with the Hyperledger Besu EVM, supported the processing of raw Ethereum transaction format, and exposing JSON-RPC communication relays. Danno will also discuss the techniques used to address incompatible features of Hedera with Etheruem in a user friendly way, and the Hedera unique services exposed as system contracts.

Last Mile Problem in Self-Sovereign Identity - Biometric Authentification and Device Independent Wallet for Hyperledger Indy - Non Kawana & Ken Naganuma, Hitachi,Ltd.
Self-sovereign identity, in which identity is managed by the individual, is spreading. In this scheme, personal smartphones are often used to store and manage wallet information such as VC and secret keys for digital signature. However, this is not a true self-sovereign identity. For example, the problem exists that when a smartphone is lost, the individual's identity can no longer be proven. We think that identity is an object that should be tied to a person, not a smartphone. Therefore, we have developed an architecture to handle SSI without using a smartphone or other personal device, and implemented it in Hyperledger Indy. Specifically, by generating the secret key for Hyperledger Indy’s wallet from the individual's biometric information and encrypting and storing the wallet in the cloud storage. In this way, the wallet can be used by the user from various terminals on the network. In this presentation, we will present our architecture of our device-independent SSI and a demonstration of biometric authentication technology implemented on Hyperledger Indy.

Demo: How Hyperledger Fabric Moves Charity to an Absolutely New Level of Trust - Olga Ilina & Artem Barger, Non-Profit Organization IDEAS
Charity plays a significant role in our society and is considered by many people as the most common way to repay our social debt.

The Karma project is a blockchain-based charity foundation platform that facilitates the trustful network's formation and is accountable for collecting donation funds. Karma platform introduces a blockchain-based solution that allows participants to supervise, manage and control all the platform's processes.

The blockchain network is comprised of publicly known, trustful, and prestigious organizations. All organizations' operations within the platform are fully transparent and visible, leveraging properties of immutability, provenance, and non-repudiation. Therefore the platform alleviates the results of dishonest actions, revealing fraudulent organizations' activities.

The blockchain-based Karma platform is implemented on top of Hyperledger Fabric and appears as a social apparatus that allows charity fonds to manage and maintain their projects, accept donations and share auditable public trail of all activities within the platform.

Bringing Trustworthiness in Industrial Device Lifecycle using Verifiable Credentials - Marquart Franz & Saad Bin Shams, Siemens AG
An industrial device goes through many phases in its lifecycle. Its life begins with the manufacturing phase, after which it is transported to the customer where it is onboarded and then the operational phase starts. It can then continue on functioning before it is sold to a new owner or offboarded and perhaps also replaced. The proliferation of industrial IoT devices brings in more challenges for the operational technology. Customer site should be able to go through industrial device lifecycles from multiple vendors with as much ease as possible. In this talk the presenters explain how verifiable credentials can potentially help us in achieving a trustworthy and automated approach in cycling thorough the different device phases. With the help of demo that showcases prototype industrial devices approach using verifiable credentials for German Railway operator (Deutsche Bahn), the presenters will discuss the current tools available and dive into some of their shortcomings in the context of devices. This presentation also aims to bring forward the pertinent discussion of the disconnect in the world of devices and the web technology.

From an Ethereum 1 Client to an Execution Engine - Matt Nelson & Francesco Andreoli, Consensys
From an Ethereum 1 client to an Execution engine Monolithic client infrastructure will make less and less sense as new roles appear. The Merge is pushing us to think of modularizing Besu. Maintaining a monolith that caters to both enterprises and mainnet users is not sustainable Gap between enterprise ethereum and mainnet ethereum is growing (EIP 1559, gas fee optimization… the Merge itself). Modular architecture: Is more aligned with Open Source Software. Enables more contributors from the ecosystem Enables configurations for different use-cases without extraneous components or complexity Unlock opportunities (ex: MEV support by extracting TX pool)

Keynote: Hyperledger Besu and the Upcoming Merge - Hart Montgomery, CTO, Hyperledger Foundation & Tim Beiko, Protocol Support, Ethereum Foundation
Hyperledger Besu is one of the most exciting open source blockchain projects today: on one hand, it is one of the most popular choices for permissioned, enterprise ethereum applications.  On the other hand, it is one of the main execution clients for nodes on the Ethereum mainnet and is extremely important for public Ethereum. In fact, Hyperledger Besu was one of nine clients selected to participate in the EF’s Client Incentive Program. In this session, Hart Montgomery (CTO of the Hyperledger Foundation) will explain some background on Besu, a little bit of the project’s history, and why it is exciting to have an Ethereum execution client with a fully open-development model. Tim Beiko (Ethereum Foundation) will then explain the importance of Besu to Ethereum and the upcoming merge. Finally, we will hear from Besu maintainers on what excites them about Besu and how others can get involved in the community.

The Giving Chain - Hardik Gupta, Instaraise
The Giving Chain is a Social Impact project created by the Hyperledger Princeton Meetup. The Purpose of the project is to decentralize local charity giving by creating the Giving Chain and the R2D application. The application will use Hyperledger Firefly to create an asset to be donated. The R2D (Recipient to Donor) then notifies the participant in the giving chain that an asset has been created and is ready to be donated. The asset is then tracked till it is received by someone with a need. Hardik Gupta will give a presentation on The Giving Chain and How the project will affect the whole supply chain. The project is made using the Hyperledger Firefly, the presentation will also include the basics of Firefly and how one can use it. Toward Fully-Decentralized System With Hyperledger Fabric - Requirement Analysis of Decentralized System Configuration/Operations and Potential Use of a Decentralized Operations Tool “OpsSC” - Tatsuya Sato, Hitachi, Ltd.
A system using Hyperledger Fabric (Hyperledger Fabric-based system) provides the value of executing transactions inter multiple organizations in a decentralized manner. To maximize this value, it is essential to maintain decentralization not only in the execution system but also in the entire system, including system configuration and management. On the other hand, Hyperledger Fabric is still in the process of maturing and full-decentralization is still difficult to achieve (e.g., ops with a single centralized script as a bad practice). The lack of clarity on how to achieve this may be a disincentive for production uses of Hyperledger Fabric. So, Tatsuya tries to analyze comprehensive basic requirements for realizing fully-decentralized Hyperledger Fabric-based systems and design a reference architecture to satisfy the requirements. In addition, he also lists various types of system management workflows (e.g., BC network ops) to which the requirements would potentially apply, and then demonstrates the applicability of "OpsSC" which is a decentralized system operation tool for Hyperledger Fabric and is registered as a Labs project (https://github.com/hyperledger-labs/fabric-opssc).

Demo: 2 Real World DLT Projects for Siemens & Public Sector in Switzerland - Waleed El Sayed & Maria Lupuleasa, sonono LLC
Waleed is going to present 2 real world projects, that his team has implemented.

The first project is for public sector; The courts of Basel city make certain court's files available on their portal for judges / journalists / lawyers / parties. These can be read online or downloaded. Deadlines are an important working tool for the courts, and the release of documents and access to documents must be traceable. This traceability is guaranteed with postal letters. Waleed's team used Blockchain technology to replace the postal letters with digital reports.

The second project is for Siemens Mobility Switzerland. Machines should provide measurement data to be checked and approved by different parties. These Data should be read automatically from the machine and written in to the Blockchain. A certificate will be created and will be approved by another party which is responsible for that.

Beyond the Language Barrier – Translating Hyperledger Fabric Documentation Into Japanese - Yuki Kondo, Hitachi, Ltd. & Daiki Nakashima, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
Hyperledger Fabric is used for various use cases all over the world. However, it was hard for non-English speakers to learn the technology correctly because the official documentation was written in English and updated quickly. The quick updates made the local language's learning resources outdated soon. To remove the language barrier, Hyperledger Fabric Documentation Working Group started translating the official documentation in various language. When the content is available in the native language, more non-English speakers will easily learn and adopt Hyperledger Fabric technologies. As one of the sub-groups, Japanese Doc WG was launched in July 2020. Japanese Doc WG created the translation contribution process, communication channel (e.g. monthly Zoom meeting, Japanese chat group) and Kanban board. To improve the productivity and quality, Japanese Doc WG made Japanese terminology and introduced a translation tool while collaborating with translation experts. Japanese Doc WG also hosted Meetups to increase the number of contributors. In this session, Japanese Documentation WG will share their experiences for other language communities to work on the translation.

A Sustainable Healthcare Ecosystem Based on Blockchain - Diógenes José Firmiano, IASIS
After more than 2 years of a pandemic, we live in another world. A world where inequality grows dramatically and with it, the difficulties in funding global health. The world has more than $3.5 trillion in annual health waste and as the population ages, the costs are likely to grow. After working on one of the largest healthcare interoperability projects in the world using blockchain (Brazil's National Health Data Network with more than 1.5 billion records), we have advanced in structuring a decentralized health digital wallet using DID and Hyperledger Indy and in the structuring of a dual blockchain model culminating in a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organisation) that aims to fund sustainable health projects around the world by reducing health waste spending for the less fortunate.

Digital Identity Using the vLEI - Christoph Schneider, Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF)
With heightened reliance on remotely delivered services and transactions, the need for safer and sounder digital identification and verification is required and will become the norm in the future. This especially is true looking forward to mandates for the adoption of zero trust frameworks in which digital credentials will be issued and then used for identification and operational purposes. GLEIF is committed to making concrete and lasting improvements to the process of identity verification by leveraging the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) in digital tools. GLEIF has made the LEI verifiable by creating the vLEI (verifiable LEI) with digital credentials that deliver decentralized identification and verification for organizations as well as the persons who represent their organizations either in official or functional roles. GLEIF has made much progress on developing the governance, credentials and infrastructure since introducing the vLEI at the 2020 Hyperledger Global Forum and will share an updated at this progress in this session.

Insight Into a Production-Ready Hyperledger Fabric Certificate Authority - Noah Elia Schär & Aaron Beer, PostFinance Inc.
In a private, permissioned blockchain, all participants must be identified. Hyperledger Fabric uses a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to manage these identities. For testing purposes, the Cryptogen tool can be used to initially create the crypto material. However, for a production network, its use is strongly discouraged. One important reason is that the entire lifecycle of the crypto material cannot be managed. Due to the limited documentation, the barrier to entry is high to build a production-ready PKI in Hyperledger Fabric. We at PostFinance TechLab have taken the leap and replaced Cryptogen with Hyperledger Fabric CA. In our presentation, we will explain the biggest differences and most importantly the benefits of Fabric CA. In addition, we will explain many of the lessons we learned during the trial & error implementation process with concrete examples and a demo. We break down the problem of moving to Fabric CA into individual steps and show how we built a state-of-the-art PKI that interoperates with the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain. We plan to make our learnings available for the official Hyperledger Fabric documentation.

The Perun Framework: Towards Blockchain Scalability & Interoperability - Matthias Geihs, PolyCrypt GmbH
The Perun Framework is a toolkit for enabling blockchain scalability and interoperability through state channel technology, which is based on a series of renowned research papers. In this talk we want to give an overview of the Framework and how it can be used. We also want to highlight recent developments of the project and give an outlook on what's to come. Recent developments include the integration of Ethereum, Cosmos, and Polkadot blockchains. The integration of Dfinity and Fabric blockchains is in development. This means that Perun state channels can be used on all of these networks while the modular design of the Framework allows writing applications that are easy to port from one network to the other. We recently demonstrated cross-chain capabilities of Perun channels for the first time and are working on enabling this feature for all supported blockchains. Furthermore, we are looking to apply Perun channels in the context of Hyperledger Aries for enabling secure and trustless payments for verifiable credentials.

Implementing SSI and Token Economics in Metaverse using Blockchain - Vikram Sharma & Karthik Sukumaran, HCL Technologies Ltd
Metaverse is still in its infancy but it is attributed with a lot of potential to change how we socialize, play games, or conduct business. Metaverses are created with real-life like scenes to provide the users with real-world like experience using a combination of technologies. Those primarily include AR/VR/MR, Blockchain, 3D Content Creation tools, IoT and Artificial Intelligence. Most of the Metaverse currently existing are siloes and the identities of Users are also limited to platform itself. Thus, any assets created, or acquired in one Metaverse cannot be moved to another. The focus however has started moving towards interoperability and it is therefore imperative that the identity is decentralized and allows user to maintain relationships with multiple Metaverse with one identity. Also, many use-cases require users to prove that they are who they claim they are. This emphasizes the need for Verified Credentials and SSI. In this session, we would cover, how we can implement a SSI to be used for decentralization and enable token economics using Hyperledger projects. The session will also include the architecture, challenges and learnings from the implementation.

Efficient Anonymous Updatable Credentials - Samuel Jaques, University of Oxford
Maybe you want to put your credentials on the blockchain, but you're worried about privacy. You don't want to be tracked every time you present your identity. One option is something called an accumulator. Accumulators use a short piece of data to represent a list of credentials, with users doing most of the work to maintain extra data to prove that they have a valid credential. Accumulators can easily issue and revoke credentials, and can be constructed with high privacy guarantees and little trust required. However, this makes them slow. Many variants on the classic constructions have been proposed to improve performance, but these compromise privacy and trust, sometimes in subtle ways. In this talk Sam will give an overview of what accumulators are, how they can be used, and describe some fundamental limits on the trade-off between privacy and efficiency. He and collaborators are working on a new approach which uses distributed trust to avoid some of the theoretical limits and create a completely anonymous accumulator that should be faster than previous methods.

Formalizing and Standardizing Blockchain Interoperability - Dhinakaran Vinayagamurthy, IBM & Rafael Belchior, Blockdaemon & Técnico Lisboa
With more blockchain networks being developed for specific applications and across layers of the stack, interoperability has emerged as one of the crucial features of blockchain technology to expand the blockchain tenets across multiple independent blockchain networks. Still a maturing technology, blockchain interoperability is undergoing research and development of solutions with different properties and tradeoffs. The technology necessary for achieving it is fragmented and a formal approach to the problem of general-purpose blockchain interoperability is still lacking. In this talk, Dhinakaran and Rafael will analyze the problem of blockchain interoperability from theoretical and practical standpoints. They will start by defining it and present an ontology for interoperability solutions. They will then present their existing standardization efforts in the IETF DLT Gateway Interoperability group. After that, they will present their ongoing work at the Hyperledger Interoperability Task Force on providing a formal security definition of interoperability across distributed ledgers using the framework of universal composability that is vetted by the cryptography research community.

In January 2021, in accordance with its digital transformation strategy, UNJSPF deployed a solution based on blockchain and biometrics to transform a legacy process with a global reach (80K beneficiaries located in more than 195 countries). UNJSPF beneficiaries are required to sign and submit a ‘Certificate of Entitlement,’ or ‘CE,’ every year as a “proof of existence” and "proof of country of residence", to continue receiving their benefits. The UNJSPF ‘Digital CE solution" aimed to create, verify, and secure the digital identities of beneficiaries - while also preventing fraud – using biometrics; identifying their locations with geo-location technology; and storing transactions on an immutable, traceable and independently auditable ledger, using the Hyperledger Indy blockchain platform. This session highlights the lessons learned after the first year of implementation of the Digital CE solution, addressing both technical and process related aspects of the deployment. This solution was selected as a finalist of two prestigious awards: The 2021 UN-Secretary-General's award for innovation and sustainability; and the 2020 Gartner’s Eye on Innovation Awards for Government.

Accelerated Hyperledger Fabric for Supply Chain Applications in Semiconductor Industry - Muthukumar Kumaraswamy & Haris Javaid, AMD
Efficient supply chain tracking is a key requirement in semiconductor industry to limit the grey market by providing transparency, product provenance and detection of counterfeit units. It is estimated that 7.5 billion dollars are wasted in semiconductor grey market every year. AMD has developed a Hyperledger Fabric based solution for tracking of its supply chain operations to provide increased transparency and product provenance, thus reducing the impact of grey market. Since performance at scale is a key requirement, FPGA based hardware acceleration is used which can enable processing of tens of thousands of transactions per second. This session will discuss production implementation challenges, use of hardware acceleration, automated deployment processes, and a short demo at the end. The audience will leave the session with a better understanding of designing a scalable supply chain application for the semiconductor industry, leveraging hardware acceleration technology.

Hosted Discussion: Rhode Island Leads on Digital Identity Solutions with Hyperledger - Liz Tanner, State of Rhode Island & Jim Mason, DTCC
The smallest state in the US has become a leader in digital transformation in government under the leadership of Liz Tanner, Director, Dept. of Business Regulation. She has led the transformation for Digital Identity and Credentials in the state. Her department manages all the licenses and credentials for businesses and individuals. That covers accounting, restaurants, banking and all other types of businesses and professionals operating in the state. Leveraging Hyperledger Indy and Aries, Liz has delivered an MVP solution to issue SSI ( Self-Sovereign Identities ) to individuals and organizations using digital wallets. Licenses issued are credentials that a party can choose to share with others to validate their identity or credentials. Liz will cover Rhode Island’s digital transformation journey: how they got here, the opportunities they are focused on, the challenges they’ve identified and the forward strategies they use to deliver identity and digital solutions for digital government.

Creating a Retail CBDC Prototype With Hyperledger Fabric - Imre Kocsis, Budapest University of Technology and Economics
While the debate about CBDCs has been going on for years now, there are very few publicly accessible implementations. This was even more true in 2021, when in a research cooperation with the Hungarian National Bank (MNB), a team at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) set out to create one - as a prerequisite for researching the future applications of CBDCs in smart contract ecosystems. Join for this talk Imre Kocsis, a lead expert of the team who created this hybrid CBDC prototype, who gives a tour of the design goals, design decisions and the implementation. The technical highlights include an Ethereum-style pseudonymous CBDC ledger over Hyperledger Fabric; financial institutions acting as CBDC minters (by conversion) and end-user transaction relays; and financial institution based "bridging out" of a CBDC to a permissioned Ethereum network, using Hyperledger Cactus. Performance figures are also provided. Maybe even more importantly than a proof-of-feasibility for a Fabric-based retail CBDC, many open questions became apparent; e.g., the regulatory compliance of private blockchains "trusted" with CBDCs. An overview of these challenges will be also given.

Elevating Trust with cert-manager in Hyperledger Fabric - Alexander Meijer, Corsha, Inc.
Trust is a key issue in any network, but is perhaps of paramount importance in blockchain networks. It is so crucial, in fact, that "Trust" and its derivatives are mentioned no less than 14 times in Satoshi's seminal Bitcoin whitepaper. Hyperledger Fabric networks are no exception; in Fabric, trust flows from the Certificate Authorities (CAs) to every participant on the network who utilize that trust to transact according to their role. Operating these CAs properly, then, is central to the trust and security model of Fabric. In this discussion, Alex will reinforce why using centralized PKI generators (such as cryptogen) presents a trust risk for production networks. Corsha's experiences with the Fabric CA will also be discussed, and why it was ultimately decided that the operational overhead of that system made ongoing maintenance challenging. Alex will introduce the cert-manager project and go over how Corsha integrated that with their Kubernetes-native Hyperledger Fabric networks. Finally, Alex will propose a Fabric network architecture that does not rely on a trusted setup and does not require any CA servers, with fully automated certificate management.

Making Distributed Ledgers Interoperable Using Weaver (Hyperledger Labs) - Venkatraman Ramakrishna, IBM
The emergence of DeFi and CBDC have created a pressing need for blockchain/DLT interoperability. Several research and development efforts have focused on this challenge, as interoperability is a key ingredient for Web3. In this talk, Ramakrishna will present the unique value proposition of Weaver, a Hyperledger Labs project, and show how it advances the state-of-the-art in DLT interoperability by enabling almost any cross-network operation using a combination of basic interoperability modes. He will describe the Weaver architecture, built on design principles of network self-sovereignty, avoidance of DLT modifications, and eschewing trusted mediators and third-party blockchains. Ramakrishna will show how Weaver implements protocols for cross-network data sharing, asset exchange, and asset transfer, leveraging the networks' native consensus mechanisms. These protocols have been used and validated by the Bank of France and HSBC to communicate ledger state and effect delivery-vs-payment across the boundaries of CBDC and securities networks built on Fabric and Corda. He will conclude the presentation with a list of features and supported DLTs in Weaver and the project's future roadmap.
